What are Transitions Lenses?

Ft. Myers & Lehigh Acres Eyewear - Transition Lenses

Automatic sunshade!

Transitions is a brand of lenses that produces a unique type of lens for eyeglasses–a photocromic lens. Photocromic lenses are those kinds which adjust their darnkness, or tint, based on the lighting conditions. They are primarily activated by ultra-violet light from the sun.

When activated by the sun, a photocromic lens will gradually turn darker, achieving a tint. This is most useful, allowing the owner to cease carrying sunglasses, and avoid trying to fit them around normal prescription eyeglasses. Further, it’s a layer of protection from dangerous UV rays–Transitions lenses block 100% of ultra-violet light.

How do Transitions lenses work?

When activated by the sun, a photocromic lens will gradually turn darker, achieving a tint. This is most useful, allowing the owner to cease carrying sunglasses, and avoid trying to fit them around normal prescription eyeglasses. Further, it’s a layer of protection from dangerous UV rays–Transitions lenses block 100% of ultra-violet light.

This technology is achieved by infusing the glass with invisible molecules–usually silver chloride–which react favorably to the sun’s rays. The chemical is used extensively to make other products light-sensitive–camera film, for instance. The molecule is a tiny crystal, which after absorbing a light photon, creates a tiny bit of metallic silver. Enough of those give the eyewear a desirable tinting effect–even more desirable for Ft. Myers/Lehigh Acres eyewear!

The typical Transitions lens achieves most of its darkness within one minute of stepping outside, although it will continue darkening slightly for some time after. On the way back indoors, expect between two and five minutes before the lenses have turned back to be mostly clear. Lenses will also lose their tint inside of vehicles, as vehicle windshields are also coated to block ultra-violet light.

The result is a pair of eyeglasses that function quite normally indoors, being clear or very-near-so, which when taken outdoors will automatically darken and protect the wearer’s eyes from harmful UV rays. There is absolutely no need for the wearer to do anything manually to activate them.

Dr. Azizi, Optometrist at West Florida Eye Care is proud to make Transitions lenses available to all his Ft. Myers and Lehigh Acres eyewear customers.
